Orebro Travel Guide

Örebro is a university city about 200 km from Stockholm. Most of what you’ll want lies along one river, the Svartån. This page gets you oriented, flags what is closed or seasonal right now, and points you to the in-depth guides.

When you need this

You are breaking a trip between Stockholm, Gothenburg, Oslo or Karlstad, or spending a day in the city. You want to know whether the castle is open the week you travel, whether the county museum is worth planning around, and how to pay for a bus without a Swedish travel card. Or you are looking for a lake, a beach or a day hike close to town.

The city at a glance

Örebro kommun had 160,687 residents on 31 December 2025 and 160,363 on 31 July 2026, according to Statistics Sweden (SCB). The municipality calls itself Sweden’s seventh-largest by population, and its university has about 16,000 students. A first visit centers on a handful of sights close together on the Svartån:

Getting there

By train: Visit Örebro, the region’s official visitor site, says there are direct trains from Stockholm and Gothenburg and points to SJ for bookings. From Malmö or Copenhagen you change trains, for example at Mjölby. Mälartåg runs an hourly line Örebro–Eskilstuna–Stockholm–Arlanda–Uppsala. From Arlanda: Mälartåg’s line reaches Arlanda. Visit Örebro gives about 2 hours 40 minutes for the trip by coach, or by train with a change in Stockholm.

Getting around

Buses in the city and the county are run by Länstrafiken Örebro, the county’s public transport. City buses meet at the Slottet stop by the castle; regional buses leave from the travel center (resecentrum) at Örebro Central Station. For a visitor, payment works like this:

• A single ticket can be bought with a payment card from the driver on every Länstrafiken bus.
• The app is cheaper. A single ticket bought in the free Länstrafiken app costs less than one bought on board by card.
• Day and 30-day tickets by card on board are sold only on regional and express buses and Lindesberg’s city buses, not on Örebro’s city buses.
• You cannot top up travel funds (reskassa) on Örebro’s city buses.
• No tickets are sold on trains. Buy before you board.

Örebro Castle

Örebro slott stands on an islet in the Svartån at Kansligatan 1, a few minutes’ walk from the central station. Its story goes back about 700 years, to a 1300s defensive tower by the bridge. Engelbrekt took it in 1434. Duke Karl, later King Karl IX, rebuilt it as a Renaissance castle completed in 1625, and in 1810 the Riksdag, meeting in Örebro, elected Jean Baptiste Bernadotte heir to the Swedish throne. The county governor still lives in a residence in one of the towers.

Who runs it: Statens fastighetsverk, the National Property Board, owns and manages the castle and has handed the public operation to Örebrokompaniet. It is not run by the region.

Tickets: you need an entry ticket. It covers the exhibitions, the historic rooms, the children’s activities and a guided tour; the shop and café can be visited without one. The ticket shop takes no cash, only Swish or a card, and since mid-May 2026 you can also buy online. Groups of 15 or more pay the pensioner/student price.

The free tour: the historical tour takes about 40 minutes, is in Swedish and is included in the ticket. Sign up in the castle shop beforehand; no advance booking is needed. Weekend tours run at 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00 until 11 October 2026, then at 11:30 and 13:00. The tour can be adapted for accessibility and is sometimes given in Swedish sign language.

House rules and access:

• No dogs or other pets in the public part; assistance and guide dogs are welcome.
• No smoking anywhere on the castle islet, inside or out.
• The lift in the southwest entrance tower reaches three floors; the rest of the public areas need stairs.
• Strollers stay in the stroller park on the ground floor of the entrance tower.
• Rikssalen and Länssalen have hearing loops.

Ghost walks (in July and in week 44, the autumn half-term) and the evening openings need a separate ticket.

Wadköping

Wadköping lies beyond Stadsparken on the bank of the Svartån: a district of wooden houses and yards off Bertil Waldéns gata. The area is always open, and its museums and exhibitions are free; only some events charge. Inside you’ll find:

• Kungsstugan, Örebro’s oldest building, named after Duke Karl, who by tradition was a guest there in 1580 and 1581
• The childhood home of the cookbook writer Cajsa Warg, a 1600s feast house
• The Hjalmar Bergman museum, about the writer born in Örebro in 1883
• A school museum laid out as a 1920s classroom

The museums open daily 11:00–17:00 from May to August and 11:00–16:00 from September to April, and 11:00–14:00 on the eves of public holidays. No cars, mopeds or bicycles are allowed on the main street. City bus 11 stops at Wadköping; line 6 stops on Wadköpingsvägen, about 500 m away. Stadsparken, the river and Svampen

The simplest walk in Örebro is along the Svartån: the municipality’s own directions to Wadköping are to follow the river. Stadsparken, the city park, was named Sweden’s most beautiful park in 2004. Its playground has three areas, including a miniature Wadköping and a splash park, and its stage hosts events in spring, summer and autumn.

Svampen (“the Mushroom”) is a 58-meter water tower built from 1955 to Sune Lindström’s design and inaugurated in May 1958. About nine million people have been up it. Two things have changed that older guides miss. Since April 2025 it no longer stores water, and its future use is under political discussion. And the viewing deck’s hours are set by the restaurant that runs it, not by the municipality, so check the operator’s site first.

Art and the county museum

Örebro konsthall, the municipality’s contemporary-art hall, has free entry to all exhibitions. It is in the former Riksbank building in the Kulturkvarteret and opens Tuesday–Thursday 11:00–18:00, Friday 11:00–16:00 and Saturday 11:00–15:00. It closes between exhibitions (7–24 September and 22 November–3 December 2026) and on public holidays. The main entrance has a ramp and a door opener.

Örebro läns museum is closed. The county museum’s building has been shut for renovation since 2018, and the museum expects to reopen at the end of 2027. Meanwhile it runs other sites in the county, such as the Siggebohyttan mining farm and the Gråbo workers’ museum, but their 2026 summer seasons have ended. Many guides still list the museum as a city sight.

Hjälmaren

Hjälmaren is Sweden’s fourth-largest lake, with the Oset and Rynningeviken nature reserves on its shore.

Kilsbergen and Bergslagsleden

Bergslagsleden is a 280 km hiking trail through all of Örebro County, from Kloten in the north to Stenkällegården in the south, in 17 stages of 7–23 km. It is marked in orange, with blue-marked loop trails, and every stage has a rest site with a wind shelter, fireplace, woodshed and toilet. Region Örebro län is responsible for it, and the whole trail is in the Naturkartan app.

For a day in the Kilsbergen hills, Ånnaboda nature reserve has loops of 2.5–8 km and is the end of stages 9 and 10. Södra Ånnabosjön there has a sandy beach; fishing that lake needs a local permit (fiskekort). Our hiking in Sweden guide covers trail basics.

One more Örebro connection: julmust, Sweden’s Christmas soda, was launched in the city in 1910, and an Örebro factory still makes the extract most brewers use.

• Planning a visit around Örebro läns museum before late 2027.
• Turning up at the castle on a Monday to Wednesday outside summer and school holidays.
• Bringing cash to the castle shop.
• Trying to buy a Länstrafiken ticket on the train.
• Assuming Svampen is municipal and open all year.
• Setting crayfish traps in Hjälmaren.

How do I get to Örebro from Stockholm?

By direct train. Visit Örebro points to SJ for bookings, and Mälartåg runs an hourly Örebro–Eskilstuna–Stockholm–Arlanda–Uppsala line that also links Örebro with Arlanda Airport. The municipality puts Stockholm about 200 km away. Check times and prices in the operators’ planners, and note that Länstrafiken tickets cannot be bought on board trains.

Can I pay for Örebro buses with a bank card?

Yes, for a single ticket: Länstrafiken sells single tickets for a payment card from the driver on all its buses. It is cheaper to buy the single ticket in the free Länstrafiken app first. Day and 30-day tickets are sold by card on board only on regional and express buses, not on Örebro’s city buses.

How much does Örebro Castle cost, and when is it open?

An adult ticket costs 170 kronor, a child aged 3–16 125 kronor, with family tickets from 510 kronor (checked September 2026). It covers the exhibitions, historic rooms and a free 40-minute tour in Swedish. The castle opens daily 10:00–17:00 until 11 October 2026, then mostly Thursday–Sunday. The ticket shop is cashless.

Is Wadköping free to visit?

Yes. Wadköping, the old wooden-house district by the Svartån beyond Stadsparken, is always open, and its museums and exhibitions are free; only some events charge. The museums open daily, 11:00–17:00 in summer and 11:00–16:00 from September to April. Inside you find Kungsstugan, Örebro’s oldest building, and a Hjalmar Bergman museum.

Can I go up the Svampen water tower?

Can I fish in Hjälmaren without a permit?

Yes, with a rod or other hand tackle. Hjälmaren is one of the five big lakes where the Fishing Act lets anyone, foreign visitors included, fish free with hand gear. The limits: no trolling in private water near the shore, a 45 cm minimum for zander, and no crayfishing, which needs a permit granted only to commercial fishers.

Where can I hike near Örebro?

In the Kilsbergen hills. Ånnaboda nature reserve has marked loops of 2.5–8 km and is the end of stages 9 and 10 of Bergslagsleden, the 280 km trail through Örebro County. Every stage has a rest site with a wind shelter, fireplace, woodshed and toilet, and the whole trail is in the Naturkartan app.
