Four series, four places, and almost all of it free. Below are the addresses and viewpoints worth your time, the one attraction that charges a ticket, and the travel advice most guides still repeat even though it’s out of date.

When you need this

You’ve read the books or binged the series, and now you’re in Sweden. Maybe you have a free afternoon in Stockholm, a day in Skåne, or you’re deciding whether Ystad is worth a detour from Malmö. Or an older guidebook told you to start at the City Museum and buy its Millennium map. Read the section on that map before you go.

Four settings at a glance

SeriesWhereWhat you can seeTicket?
Millennium (Stieg Larsson)Södermalm, Stockholm; SandhamnStreet addresses of the characters’ homes and officeNo
Wallander (Henning Mankell)Ystad, south SkåneThe town, plus a film-set visitor centreYes, for the centre
Bron / The BridgeMalmö and the Øresund BridgeFilming districts and a viewpoint under the bridgeNo
Camilla Läckberg’s seriesFjällbacka, Bohuslän coastThe fishing village itselfNo

“Nordic noir” is the international label for this wave of Scandinavian crime fiction and TV. Visit Skåne traces The Bridge’s lineage back to Sjöwall-Wahlöö and Mankell. Wallander’s first book came out in 1991. Bron first aired in 2011.

Most of it is fiction laid over ordinary streets. Lisbeth Salander’s 21-room apartment is an invented home given a real Södermalm address. The real ones are people’s homes, so you look from the pavement and move on.

Millennium in Stockholm

Stieg Larsson’s novels live on Södermalm, which Stockholmers call Söder. Visit Stockholm, the city’s official visitor site, lists the key addresses:

  • Bellmansgatan 1: Mikael Blomkvist’s apartment, on the heights of old Söder.
  • Hökens gata 2: the Millennium magazine’s office, on the corner with Götgatsbacken.
  • Fiskargatan 9: Lisbeth Salander’s apartment, with views over Djurgården and Gamla stan. She buys 21 rooms and uses three. The name on her door, “V. Kulla”, nods to Pippi Longstocking’s Villa Villekulla.

All three are an easy afternoon’s walk apart. They are residential buildings. Don’t ring doorbells or try stairwell doors: the people who live there have nothing to do with the books.

The archipelago is the other Millennium setting. Blomkvist takes refuge on Sandhamn, the outer-archipelago village that is also the main setting of Viveca Sten’s Sandhamn Murders series. Waxholmsbolaget’s public boats reach it, but it’s a long day trip from the city.

Don’t expect a Millennium museum or a preserved set. There isn’t one. The Stockholm City Museum (Stadsmuseet) at Slussen is free. It is open as normal while the Ryssgården square outside is renovated.

The Millennium map that disappeared

For years the standard advice was simple: buy the City Museum’s Millennium walking map in the museum shop, or join one of its guided Millennium walks. Most English guides still say so.

On 15 October 2026 the museum’s own website no longer listed either. Its “on your own” page offered a 1793 Stockholm map, a virtual museum tour and a children’s trail. The tours and city-walk pages didn’t mention Millennium at all, and the old map page returned “not found”. The museum may still have stock, but don’t plan the day around it. Walk the three addresses above yourself, or ask the museum before you count on a map.

There’s also a new screen version in the works. MovieZine reported in January 2026 that a new Millennium series for Sky would film in Lithuania, not Stockholm. So the streets you walk are the books’ streets, and they won’t match that series.

Wallander in Ystad

Henning Mankell’s detective, kriminalkommissarie (detective chief inspector) Kurt Wallander, works in Ystad. The town has been his screen home since 2004. Ystad municipality counts 47 Wallander films shot in the Ystad-Österlen area, Swedish and British. That includes three new films shot in 2025 with Gustaf Skarsgård, after the series was widely reported as finished in 2016.

The one proper noir attraction in Sweden is here. Ystad Studios Visitor Center, run by the municipality, keeps original sets: the police station from the first filming, the office from the British films, and Wallander’s living room. Bus 2 takes six minutes from Ystad station, or you can walk it in about 20 minutes. The centre is fully accessible, a companion with a ledsagarbevis (companion card) enters free, and dogs other than guide dogs stay outside. The working studio next door, run by Region Skåne’s Film i Skåne, also hosted Bron.

In the books Wallander lives on Mariagatan, a real street in Ystad, and the films were largely shot at real locations around the town. For the rest of Ystad, from the medieval centre to the beaches, see our Ystad guide.

Timing: the first of the new films, Steget efter, screens at the Stockholm Film Festival in November 2026 and streams on TV4 Play Plus from spring 2027.

The Bridge in Malmö

Bron (The Bridge), created by Hans Rosenfeldt, moves between Malmö and Copenhagen. According to Visit Skåne, though, most of it was filmed in Malmö, in three areas:

AreaWhat’s there in the series
LimhamnWhere the bridge leaves the limestone shore
Västra HamnenSaga Norén’s apartment; the Turning Torso skyline
MöllevångenThe series’ police station

For the bridge itself, go to the Luftkastellet viewpoint in Limhamn. Steps lead down to the water right under the bridge.

Two limits apply. Turning Torso is a residential tower, and its owner accepts booked appointments only, with no walk-in visits and no viewing floor. Pepparholm, the artificial island from the season-two car chase, is closed to the public. You’ll only see it from the train or car.

Crossing the bridge means leaving Sweden. It opened on 1 July 2000 and carries road and rail, and Visit Skåne notes that the crossing gives views of Malmö, Denmark and the sea. Bring a passport or national ID. Sweden ran internal border controls from 12 May to 11 November 2026, so without ID you can be held up or refused entry on the way back. Tolls and trains are covered in our Øresund Bridge guide, and the city itself in our Malmö guide.

Fjällbacka and Läckberg

Fjällbacka is a fishing village in Tanum municipality on the northern Bohuslän coast. The municipality describes it as the setting of Camilla Läckberg’s crime series about the fictional Tanum police officer Patrik and his wife Erica. About 950 people live there all year. The population multiplies in summer, so the square and the rock paths are busiest then. Västtrafik bus 875 links Fjällbacka with Tanumshede. For the climb up Vetteberget and the drive from Gothenburg, see Smögen and Fjällbacka.

Where it all started: Martin Beck

If you read one thing before the trip, make it Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö. Their ten novels about Martin Beck began with Roseanna in 1965 and have been translated into 40 languages. They’re regarded as the foundation of the modern Swedish crime novel. Bo Widerberg filmed one of them as Mannen på taket. Don’t mix them up with the Beck TV films starring Peter Haber, which began in 1997 and aren’t based on the books. Svenska Deckarakademin, the Swedish Crime Writers’ Academy, was founded in 1971.

FAQ

Where is the Millennium trilogy set in Stockholm?

Mostly on Södermalm. Visit Stockholm places Mikael Blomkvist’s apartment at Bellmansgatan 1, the Millennium magazine office at Hökens gata 2, and Lisbeth Salander’s 21-room apartment at Fiskargatan 9, with “V. Kulla” on the door. All are residential buildings you see from the street, within an afternoon’s walk. Blomkvist’s refuge is Sandhamn in the archipelago.

Is there still a Millennium walking tour in Stockholm?

Not from the City Museum, as far as its own website shows. On 15 October 2026 Stadsmuseet’s tours pages listed a 1793 city map, a virtual tour and a children’s trail, but no Millennium map or walk, and the old map page returned “not found”. Older guides still recommend it. Walk the addresses yourself, or ask the museum before relying on it.

Where was Wallander filmed?

Mostly in and around Ystad in south Skåne. The municipality counts 47 Wallander films shot in the Ystad-Österlen area, Swedish and British. Ystad Studios Visitor Center keeps original sets, including the first film’s police station and Wallander’s living room, and in the fiction he lives on Mariagatan, a real Ystad street. Three new films were shot in 2025.

Where was The Bridge (Bron) filmed?

Mostly in Malmö, although the story moves between Malmö and Copenhagen. Visit Skåne names three filming areas: Limhamn by the bridge, Västra Hamnen with Saga Norén’s apartment and Turning Torso, and Möllevången with the series’ police station. For the bridge itself, the Luftkastellet viewpoint in Limhamn lets you walk down to the water beneath it.

Is there a new Millennium series?

Yes, one is in the works. MovieZine reported in January 2026 that a new Millennium series would air on Sky in the UK and much of Europe, with filming to start in spring 2026 in Lithuania, not Stockholm. No premiere date or Swedish broadcaster had been announced. The Södermalm addresses you can visit come from the books, not from the new series.

Which Swedish town is Camilla Läckberg’s setting?

Fjällbacka, a fishing village in Tanum municipality on the northern Bohuslän coast. Tanum municipality describes it as the setting of her crime series about the fictional Tanum police officer Patrik and his wife Erica. About 950 people live there year round, many more in summer. Västtrafik bus 875 connects Fjällbacka with Tanumshede.
