Walk up a Swedish stairwell and many doors carry the same little sticker. Here is what it legally means, what it stops, what it never stopped, and how to block the advertising that comes with your name on it.
When you need this
You’ve seen Ingen reklam, tack (“no advertising, thanks”) or Nej tack till reklam (“no thanks to advertising”) on doors and mailboxes and wondered what it does. Your rented flat or student room gets a stack of pizza menus and supermarket flyers every week. You put up a sticker and still get a municipal newsletter, party leaflets or a free local paper. Or advertising arrives addressed to you, or to whoever lived there before you.
How the sticker works
Sweden doesn’t ban leaflets through the letterbox. The marketing act works the other way round:
- Email, text messages, fax and automated calls need your consent in advance, with a narrow exception for a seller’s own similar products.
- Every other method of reaching you individually, including the mail slot, is allowed unless you have clearly objected.
The sticker is that objection. Konsumentverket, the Swedish Consumer Agency, calls a sign reading “ingen reklam, tack” an effective way to stop unaddressed advertising. It doesn’t need to be an official product: what counts is that the message is clear, so a handwritten note in Swedish works as well as a bought sticker.
What happens when a company ignores it? In theory the marketing act requires good marketing practice, and marketing that breaks the act can be prohibited and, if it was intentional or negligent, lead to a market-disruption fee. In practice, a leaflet that ignores your sign is a matter for the advertising industry’s own complaints board, NIX-nämnden, rather than a court. Its 2026 case list includes several complaints about unaddressed advertising delivered to homes with a “Nej tack” sign.
PostNord, the national postal operator, is no longer the main source of leaflets. It ended its standard unaddressed-advertising service in April 2023 and kept only a local variant, which, under its 2026 terms, isn’t delivered to households that have declined advertising. Other distributors carry much of what lands on your doormat now.
What still arrives
This is where most newcomers get confused. The sticker stops advertising, and several kinds of mail aren’t counted as advertising at all.
| Arrives anyway | Why |
|---|---|
| Free newspapers (gratistidningar) | Konsumentverket does not count them as advertising |
| Information from municipalities and the state | Community information (samhällsinformation) |
| Mail from political parties | Not counted as advertising |
| Mail from non-profit associations and religious communities | Community information |
| Advertising inserts in morning newspapers | Cannot be refused |
| Anything printed with your name and address | A different stream: addressed advertising |
Samhällsinformation means non-commercial community information. PostNord’s 2026 terms define its community-information product as municipal and state information sheets plus material from political parties, non-profits and religious communities. It may contain only minor marketing, and it goes to every household, sticker or not. Party mailings sent this way must also be marked with the municipality and labelled under the EU’s political-advertising rules.
The best-known recent example: in November 2024 the government’s crisis-preparedness brochure Om krisen eller kriget kommer (“If crisis or war comes”) went out in more than five million copies. Mailings like that are meant to reach everyone.
Free papers are a grey zone. Konsumentverket’s current advice is simply that they arrive despite an Ingen reklam sign. Distributors have long been asked to respect a sign that names free papers too, such as Nej tack till reklam och gratistidningar, but it’s a convention rather than a right. And you can’t pick and choose: a sign asking for one particular free paper gets you all of them.
Advertising with your name on it
A letter printed with your name and address is addressed advertising. It comes from address lists, not from a carrier walking the street, so the sticker doesn’t reach it. Two registers do.
| Block | Run by | What it does | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| NIX Adresserat | The direct-marketing industry, through the trade association Swedma | Companies must check their lists against it before sending addressed advertising | Your own current or recently ended customer relationships may continue |
| SPAR reklamspärr | SPAR, the state’s personal address register, kept by Skatteverket | Your name and address are not released when companies buy addresses for direct advertising | Only covers SPAR as an address source; surveys, market research, community and political mail still come |
The SPAR rules moved into a new act on 2 April 2026, Lag (2026:129). The right to the block came with them: on request, SPAR must record that your data may not be used in selections for direct advertising. The block stays until you remove it, and SPAR sends no confirmation.
Two things to know before you expect silence. Companies may already hold lists drawn before your block, so SPAR says it can take up to three months before addressed advertising drops off. And neither block covers other sources, such as the vehicle register or the customer and membership lists of shops you’ve joined; you contact those directly. Skatteverket adds that individual companies aren’t obliged to honour a stop request, though many do.
How to stop junk mail, step by step
- Put up a clear sign reading Ingen reklam, tack or Nej tack till reklam on the door slot or mailbox.
- Add free papers to the sign if you want them stopped too, for example Nej tack till reklam och gratistidningar.
- If you live in Sweden and get addressed ads, register in NIX Adresserat through Swedma’s link.
- Also request a SPAR reklamspärr through SPAR’s e-service, or by email to [email protected] with your name and personal identity number.
- Allow up to three months for addressed advertising to fall off.
- If leaflets keep coming despite the sign, contact the company and say you don’t want its advertising.
- Then complain to NIX-nämnden within three months of the delivery, with the company’s correct name and address and a photo or scan of the leaflet.
When the sign is ignored
Konsumentverket’s route is short: first the company, then NIX-nämnden, the industry’s board for marketing and privacy. A few practical points from NIX-nämnden’s complaint form:
- Three months is the limit. Anything older isn’t accepted, so photograph the leaflet the day it arrives.
- Name the advertiser, not the middleman. You must give the reported company’s correct details, and a call centre or similar go-between is not the right party.
- Attach the evidence as a jpg, gif, png or pdf, or send the item by post.
- No fee is stated, and free papers are outside its remit.
Warning: If unwanted marketing arrives by text or email instead, don’t reply, not even to unsubscribe. Konsumentverket warns that a reply confirms your number or address is live. Unsubscribe on the company’s own website instead.
For sales calls there’s a third register, NIX-Telefon, covered with phone scams in phone and BankID scams in Sweden.
Visitors, renters and residents
Tourists in a holiday rental. The mailbox belongs to your host. Ask before you stick anything on their door or mailbox, and sort any leaflets with the paper recycling (see recycling as a visitor).
Long-stay renters and exchange students. A sticker on your own door slot or compartment of the building’s mailbox unit is yours to put up. In a building with a shared front entrance, put it on your own box, not on the main door. How mail reaches you in the first place, including names on the door and mailbox, is covered in staying in a Swedish apartment and Swedish addresses explained.
Registered residents. SPAR only holds people who are or have been registered in Sweden, or who have a coordination number, so the SPAR block becomes relevant once you’re registered. A visitor without either has nothing to block there. Why Swedish names and addresses are so easy to look up is explained in why Swedish addresses are public.
Timing quirks. PostNord doesn’t deliver its local unaddressed advertising or community mailings in weeks 27–32, roughly July to early August. Its data on which households accept unaddressed advertising is updated in April and October, so changes can lag. And in an election year, party leaflets arrive whatever your sticker says.

FAQ
Is an “Ingen reklam” sticker legally binding in Sweden?
Indirectly. The marketing act allows marketing by post and similar methods unless you have clearly objected, and Konsumentverket says a sign on the mailbox is an effective way to object to unaddressed advertising. Breaches are usually handled by the industry’s NIX-nämnden rather than in court. The sign never covered free papers, community information or party mail.
Why do I still get mail with an “Ingen reklam” sign?
Because several kinds of mail are not counted as advertising. Konsumentverket names free newspapers and mailings from authorities, political parties and non-profit associations, and PostNord delivers community information to every household. Inserts in morning papers cannot be refused, and anything printed with your name and address is outside the sign’s scope altogether.
How do I stop advertising addressed to me by name?
Register in NIX Adresserat, the industry block register, and ask SPAR, the state address register run by Skatteverket, for a reklamspärr through its e-service or by email. Both rely on Swedish registration. Companies may still use address lists drawn earlier, so allow up to three months, and your own existing customer relationships may continue.
Can I stop free newspapers in Sweden?
Partly. Konsumentverket says free newspapers are not advertising, so an “Ingen reklam” sign does not stop them. Distributors have long been asked to respect a sign that names free papers too, such as “Nej tack till reklam och gratistidningar”, but you cannot pick and choose: asking for one free paper gets you all of them. NIX-nämnden does not handle free papers.
Where do I complain if leaflets keep coming despite my sign?
Contact the company first and tell it you don’t want its advertising. If that does not help, file a complaint with NIX-nämnden, the industry’s board for marketing and privacy, within three months of the delivery. Give the advertiser’s correct name and address and attach a photo or scan of the leaflet. No fee is stated.
What is samhällsinformation?
It means community information: non-commercial mailings such as municipal and state information sheets and material from political parties, non-profit associations and religious communities. It is delivered to every household, including those with an “Ingen reklam” sign. PostNord’s terms allow only minor marketing in it. The 2024 crisis-preparedness brochure is a well-known example.
