Gothenburg’s Christmas is one ticketed amusement park surrounded by a free, lit-up city. Below: Liseberg’s real 2026 opening days, where the city lights and markets are, and what the Christmas Eve shutdown means for trams and trains.
When you need this
- You’re deciding whether to spend an Advent weekend or Christmas week in Gothenburg.
- You need a Liseberg date and want to know which days the park is shut.
- You’d like the free lights and markets outside the park.
- You’re coming by train from Stockholm on a November or December weekend.
- You need a plan for 24 and 25 December, when Liseberg and the city museums close.
Liseberg’s 2026 Christmas calendar
Christmas at Liseberg (Jul i Lisebergsparken) is not open every day. Liseberg’s own booking calendar gives 31 opening days in the 47 days from 14 November to 30 December 2026. Until 19 December the park opens Wednesday to Sunday at most, and in November only Friday to Sunday. It is closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
| Dates (2026) | Open days | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| 14–15 November | Sat, Sun | Sat 12:00–22:00, Sun 12:00–20:00 |
| 20–22 and 27–29 November | Fri–Sun | Fri 15:00–22:00, Sat 12:00–22:00, Sun 12:00–20:00 |
| 2–6, 9–13 and 16–19 December | Wed–Sun | Wed–Thu 15:00–21:00, Fri 15:00–22:00, Sat 12:00–22:00, Sun 12:00–20:00 |
| 20–23 December | Daily | 12:00–21:00 |
| 24–25 December | Closed | — |
| 26–30 December | Daily | 12:00–20:00 |
So only weekends open before 15:00. Liseberg reserves the right to change hours, so check the calendar for your date.
Freshness note: until recently Liseberg’s own pages confirmed only a hotel-package window ending 23 December, and travel lists gave “mid-November to 30 December” without the closed days. The operator’s calendar now confirms every day above, including 26–30 December, and it matches Visit Sweden’s 2026 list.
One loose end: the calendar also shows 11:00–17:00 on every day from 31 December to 10 January 2027. No Liseberg Christmas page and no tourism listing mentions those days, and the season’s Advent stage ends on 30 December. Treat early January as unconfirmed.
Inside Christmas at Liseberg
Göteborg & Co, the City of Gothenburg’s tourism company, calls Liseberg Sweden’s largest Christmas market and counts five million lights and 2,000 Christmas trees. Liseberg itself lists five Christmas markets:
- Tyrolean market (Tyrolermarknad), with a Christmas pyramid and après-ski.
- Old-fashioned Christmas (Gammaldags jul), on the park’s Storgatan.
- Winter market (Vintermarknad), by the main stage and the ice rink.
- Santa’s village (Tomtebyn), with elves and children’s activities.
- A light show projected onto the harbor-area façades after dark, new this season.
What your ticket covers matters. Entry includes the ice rink, Santa’s house (Tomtehuset) and the Advent stage. Rides are extra: the winter rides need a ride pass (åkpass) or coupons, sold separately. Some rides can close in heavy rain, below freezing or in strong wind, so check the forecast before paying for a ride pass.
Entry is booked for a specific date and arrives as a QR code. Online is 10 kronor cheaper than the gate, and children under 110 cm enter free. If the weather turns, you can rebook for free until the park opens that day. Cancelling is free until 18:00 the day before, then costs 20% until opening.
Access: Liseberg has steep hills and cobbled paths, and both wheelchair routes to the upper park are steep. A personal attendant enters free. Wheelchairs can be borrowed by booking ahead, and strollers can be hired at the north entrance. Dogs are not allowed, except assistance dogs.
The free Christmas City
Outside Liseberg, the city’s lights are free to walk. Göteborg & Co calls the programme the Christmas City (Julstaden). The 2026 switch-on date had not been published when we checked.
A lights walk that links the main pieces:
- Start at the illuminated heart by Lejontrappan in Brunnsparken, next to the canal.
- Detour to Kungsparken for its light art.
- Look in at Grönsakstorget, set up as a winter square with light installations.
- Follow Avenyn, where all 80 trees are lit, up to Götaplatsen.
From Göteborg Central Station the park is a 10–15 minute walk, and the north entrance is the one nearest Korsvägen.
Markets beyond Liseberg
The city markets are free to walk around, and most run on Advent weekends. The castle markets are a short trip out of town.
| Market | Where | 2026 dates |
|---|---|---|
| Christmas in Haga | Haga Nygata and Tredje Långgatan, about 660 metres | Saturdays and Sundays, 28 November–20 December |
| Kronhusjul | Kronhuset, in the historic center | 25 November–20 December (13 themed markets, weekdays too) |
| Gunnebo House | Mölndal | 14–15, 21–22 and 28–29 November |
| Tjolöholm Castle | Kungsbacka | 20–22 and 27–29 November, 4–6 December |
| Nääs Castle | Lerum | 28–29 November, 5–6 December |
| Bohus Fortress | Kungälv | 28–29 November, 5–6 December |
Haga runs only on Saturdays and Sundays. If you’re in town midweek, Kronhusjul is open on weekdays as well. For the glögg rules and markets elsewhere in Sweden, see our Christmas markets in Sweden guide, and for the neighborhood itself, our Haga guide.
Lucia and the holiday week
Lucia falls on Sunday 13 December 2026. In 2025 Göteborg & Co listed five Lucia concerts with Gothenburg Cathedral’s boys’ and girls’ choirs, with advance booking advised. It also listed a Lucia event on Avenyn and Götaplatsen with 150 singers and a vehicle parade from World of Volvo. Those listings are 2025’s. The 2026 dates were not published when we checked, so watch for the cathedral’s ticket release. Our Lucia guide explains the tradition.
Christmas Eve (julafton), 24 December, is the main day of the Swedish Christmas. In 2026 it is a Thursday. It is not a public holiday in law, but Christmas Day and Boxing Day are.
| Date (2026) | Liseberg | Museum of Gothenburg | Trams and buses in the city | Systembolaget |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wed 23 December | 12:00–21:00 | Not on its closed-day list | — | Last day to buy before Christmas |
| Thu 24 December | Closed | Closed | Sunday timetable, no night traffic | Closed |
| Fri 25 December | Closed | Closed | Sunday timetable with night traffic | Closed |
| Sat 26 December | 12:00–20:00 | Not on its closed-day list | Sunday timetable with night traffic | Closed |
The Museum of Gothenburg closes on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, so the city museums are no fallback; our Gothenburg museums guide gives each one’s hours. Systembolaget, the state alcohol retailer, is closed from Thursday 24 to Sunday 27 December. Buy wine or bottled glögg with alcohol by Wednesday 23 December.
Getting there and around
Check the rail closure weekends first. Track works close the line between Gothenburg and Alingsås on 13–15 November, 27–29 November and 11–13 December 2026, with replacement buses. The first is Liseberg’s opening weekend, and the other two are Liseberg weekends too. A Stockholm–Gothenburg trip on those dates takes longer, so check the timetable before you book. Our Stockholm to Gothenburg train guide has the details. On 13 December the new part of Göteborg Central Station also opens for regional trains.
Christmas Eve is a Sunday timetable. Västtrafik’s 2026 holiday table says that on 24 December all traffic in Gothenburg, Mölndal and Partille runs as on a Sunday, with no night traffic. That makes it the one holiday evening when you can be stranded. Christmas Day and Boxing Day also run as Sundays, but with night traffic. Check the journey planner for your last departure.
On trams and buses in zone A, tap a contactless card or phone for a 90-minute single; each traveler needs their own card. See our Gothenburg public transport guide.
Weather: Gothenburg’s December mean temperature is 2.1 °C (SMHI normal 1991–2020). Evenings outdoors at Liseberg call for warm, waterproof layers.

FAQ
When is Liseberg open for Christmas in 2026?
On set days from Saturday 14 November to Wednesday 30 December 2026. In November the park opens Friday to Sunday, in early December Wednesday to Sunday, then daily from 20 to 23 December and from 26 to 30 December. It is closed on 24 and 25 December. Hours vary from 12:00–20:00 to 15:00–22:00, so check Liseberg’s calendar for your date.
Is Liseberg open on Christmas Eve?
No. Liseberg is closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, Thursday 24 and Friday 25 December 2026. The last day before Christmas is Wednesday 23 December, open 12:00–21:00, and the park reopens on Boxing Day, Saturday 26 December, from 12:00 to 20:00. Christmas Eve is the main day of the Swedish Christmas, and most of the city closes with it.
Where can I see the Christmas lights in Gothenburg?
Free, in the city center. Göteborg & Co points to the illuminated heart at Lejontrappan in Brunnsparken, lights in all 80 trees along Avenyn up to Götaplatsen, light art in Kungsparken and a winter square with light installations at Grönsakstorget. The 2026 switch-on date was not published when checked. Liseberg’s five million lights need an entry ticket.
What Christmas markets are there in Gothenburg besides Liseberg?
In the city, the Haga Nygata street market runs Saturdays and Sundays from 28 November to 20 December 2026, and Kronhusjul fills Kronhuset with themed markets from 25 November to 20 December. Castle markets at Gunnebo, Tjolöholm, Nääs and Bohus Fortress run on November and early-December weekends. All are free to walk around.
How do trams run in Gothenburg on Christmas Eve?
On Christmas Eve all Västtrafik traffic in Gothenburg, Mölndal and Partille runs to a Sunday timetable, with no night traffic, so the last tram home comes earlier than usual. Christmas Day and Boxing Day also run as Sundays, but with night traffic. Check the journey planner for the exact last departure on 24 December.
Do I need to book Liseberg tickets in advance at Christmas?
Yes, in practice. Christmas entry is booked for a specific date in Liseberg’s calendar and delivered as a QR code; buying online is 10 kronor cheaper than at the gate. Children under 110 cm enter free. You can rebook for free until the park opens on your day, which helps if the weather turns.
