You do not need to fill a suitcase with formula for Sweden. Pack enough for the first day, then buy the rest in any supermarket or pharmacy. The real work is reading a Swedish pack and making a bottle the way Swedish food authorities advise.

When you need this

  • You are arriving with a baby and deciding how much formula to pack
  • Your usual brand is not on the shelf and you need an equivalent
  • You are at the baby shelf trying to decode ersättning, tillskottsnäring, välling and gröt
  • You are making a bottle in a rented flat, a hotel or a cabin
  • Your baby needs a hypoallergenic, anti-reflux or lactose-free formula
  • Your toddler is moving from formula to food and you want the Swedish norms

Where to buy it

Supermarkets have a baby shelf with infant formula, follow-on formula, powdered baby porridge, välling and baby food in jars and squeeze pouches. Pharmacy chains stock the same everyday brands and also carry the specialist formulas. The brands you will see most are Semper (sold as BabySemp and owned by the Swiss Hero group), Nestlé NAN and HiPP.

Sweden has no law on shop opening hours, so supermarkets are open in the evening and on Sundays. Store size matters more than the day of the week. A small convenience store may have just one formula and a few pouches, while a large supermarket or a pharmacy has the full range. In sparsely populated areas the nearest pharmacy can be a long drive, so stock up in town. On Christmas Eve and Midsummer Eve many stores close early. Buy formula the day before.

You will not find multi-buy deals or special displays for stage-1 formula. EU law bans point-of-sale advertising, free samples, discount coupons, special sales and tie-in sales for infant formula. The ban does not cover follow-on formula or baby food, so those can be on offer. To compare prices, use the unit price (jämförpris) on the shelf label. How it works is explained in our guide to Swedish supermarkets.

Reading the Swedish pack

Labels have to be in a language shoppers easily understand, and in Sweden that means Swedish, often alongside other Nordic languages. Look for the two legal names first, because they tell you the age range.

On the packWhat it isAge
Modersmjölksersättning (often just ersättning, stage 1)Infant formula that can be the baby’s only foodFrom birth
Tillskottsnäring (stage 2)Follow-on formula, part of a mixed dietOver 6 months only
Drickfärdig / färdigblandadReady-to-drink formulaCheck which of the two above it is
VällingA cereal-and-milk drinkBabies already eating food, and toddlers

EU law requires follow-on formula to say that it is only for babies over six months and must not replace breast milk before then. The two products must also look clearly different. Even so, tillskottsnäring is the box people most often buy by mistake for a newborn. For a baby under six months, look for modersmjölksersättning or a number 1.

Infant formula packs look plainer than in some countries. EU rules ban pictures of babies on them, and ban any image or text that idealizes formula. Only graphics that identify the product or show how to prepare it are allowed. Every infant-formula pack also carries a notice that breastfeeding is best. None of this means the product is lower in quality. Infant and follow-on formula sold anywhere in the EU follow the same composition rules, so a Swedish brand is made to the same standard as the one you use at home.

Välling, porridge and baby food

Välling is the Swedish product visitors don’t recognize. It is a powder you mix with water to make a drinkable porridge of cereal and milk, and it is given by bottle or cup to babies who already eat food and to toddlers. It is not a formula. In Sweden it is regulated as a baby cereal, like the boxes of powdered porridge (gröt) next to it.

Livsmedelsverket, the Swedish Food Agency, suggests iron-fortified powdered porridge for babies under one. It advises parents to vary brands and grains, and to give no more than three porridge or välling meals a day. Swedish baby cereals and baby foods have to meet a national regulation, SLVFS 1997:27. It limits added sugars in cereals, caps the fat in baby meals and sets very strict pesticide limits.

Jars and squeeze pouches (klämpåse, often called klämmis) are everywhere. Livsmedelsverket calls jar food “not wrong”, and notes that unsalted food from the family pot works too. You won’t see the Keyhole health symbol on baby products, and that is not a warning sign. By regulation, food for children under three may not carry it.

Special formulas: go to a pharmacy

Hypoallergenic formulas are sold at pharmacies (apotek), not supermarkets. That includes extensively hydrolysed and amino-acid formulas for cow’s-milk allergy, such as Nutramigen, Althéra, Alfamino and Pepticate. Pharmacies also stock sensitive, anti-reflux and lactose-free formulas. Some of these are foods for special medical purposes, which Swedish residents may get on prescription. As a visitor you buy them over the counter.

Bring your home pack with you. By law, every pharmacy must have a pharmacist on duty while it is open, and they can match your formula by type: standard, sensitive, anti-reflux or hydrolysed. Asking costs nothing. The pharmacist’s legal duty to advise covers medicines, so help with formula is a service rather than a right. For more on how Swedish pharmacies work, see pharmacies in Sweden.

Making a bottle the Swedish way

Livsmedelsverket’s advice is more relaxed than some countries’ guidance, and it is official:

  1. Run the cold tap until the water is cold. Never use the hot tap. It can carry copper from the pipes, and in Sweden hot tap water does not count as drinking water.
  2. Heat the water, then mix exactly as the pack says.
  3. Boil it only if the pack tells you to, or if you have doubts about the water. Municipal water that is safe to drink can be used unboiled. If you are unsure, boil it or heat it to at least 70 °C.
  4. Clean the bottles well. They don’t need to be sterilized. If your own pack or health service says to sterilize, following the stricter advice is fine.
  5. Throw away what the baby leaves, and check the pack for how long mixed formula keeps.

Never make the formula stronger or weaker, add oil, or make your own from cow’s milk. Livsmedelsverket warns that getting the proportions wrong can harm a baby’s kidneys or growth. At a cabin with a private well, test the water before giving it to a baby, because small children are more sensitive to bacteria and chemicals. Where a well has not been tested, ready-to-drink formula removes the question. Our tap water guide covers wells and boil-water notices.

Foods to hold back before one

These are items parents can pick up at a Swedish supermarket without noticing the risk. All of the advice below comes from Livsmedelsverket.

FoodAdviceWhy
HoneyNone before age oneSpores can rarely cause infant botulism
Rice drinks and rice cakesNot for small childrenArsenic
Rice porridge and rice vällingVary with other grains and brandsArsenic
Cow’s milk as a drinkWait until oneToo little iron, and it crowds out other food
SaltGo easy under oneBlood pressure

Livsmedelsverket also advises daily vitamin D drops (D-droppar) for all children in their first two years, and pharmacies sell them. Formula can be used through the whole first year. For a vegan household, the family’s usual rice drink is the one swap to avoid, as our vegan guide explains.

What to pack from home

Pack enough for arrival day, plus ready-to-drink bottles for travel days, and buy the rest in Sweden. Food moves freely within the EU for your own use. From outside the EU you may bring up to 2 kg of powdered infant formula per person, unopened and branded, and a pack you are currently using is also accepted. Bringing food into Sweden has the full rules.

Formula recalls in Sweden are announced in Swedish. In January and February 2026, Nestlé recalled batches of NAN 1 and Alfamino in Sweden as a precaution, because of possible cereulide in an ingredient oil. No other Nestlé products were affected. If you buy formula here, check Livsmedelsverket’s recall list (återkallanden) now and then.

FAQ

Can I buy baby formula in Swedish supermarkets?

Yes. Supermarkets stock infant formula, follow-on formula, baby porridge, välling and baby food on a dedicated baby shelf, and pharmacies carry the same everyday brands. Semper, Nestlé NAN and HiPP are common. A small convenience store may have only one or two products, so buy your main supply at a larger supermarket or a pharmacy.

What is the Swedish word for baby formula?

Modersmjölksersättning, usually shortened to ersättning or mjölkersättning, is infant formula suitable from birth. Tillskottsnäring is follow-on formula, only for babies over six months who eat other food. Välling is a drinkable porridge of cereal and milk for older babies and toddlers, not a formula. Barnmat means baby food in general.

Can I use Swedish tap water for baby formula?

Yes, from the cold tap. Run it until it is cold, heat it, and mix as the pack says. Livsmedelsverket says municipal water need not be boiled unless the pack tells you to; if you doubt the water, boil it or heat it to at least 70 °C. Never use the hot tap, and test a private well first.

Do I need to sterilize bottles in Sweden?

Livsmedelsverket’s advice is that bottles and teats must be cleaned carefully but do not need sterilizing. If your formula pack or your own health service says to sterilize, following the stricter advice is fine. Throw away any formula left in the bottle after a feed, and check the pack for how long mixed formula keeps.

Is ready-to-drink formula sold in Sweden?

Yes. Pharmacies and many supermarkets sell ready-to-drink infant formula, for example Semper’s BabySemp 1 in 200 ml bottles marked drickfärdig. It needs no water or mixing, so it is the easiest choice for a flight day, a long drive or a cabin where you are unsure about the well water. Expect to pay more per feed than for powder.

Where do I find hypoallergenic or special formula?

At a pharmacy (apotek). Pharmacy chains stock extensively hydrolysed and amino-acid formulas such as Nutramigen, Althéra, Alfamino and Pepticate, as well as anti-reflux and sensitive formulas. Supermarkets usually do not. Bring your home pack and ask the pharmacist to match it by type. Every pharmacy has a pharmacist on duty while it is open, and asking costs nothing.

What is välling?

A Swedish cereal drink made from a powder mixed with water, given by bottle or cup to babies who already eat food and to toddlers. It is regulated as a baby cereal, not as formula. Livsmedelsverket suggests varying brands and grains, going easy on rice-based versions because of arsenic, and keeping porridge and välling to three meals a day at most.

Can I bring my baby’s formula from home?

Yes. From another EU country there is no limit for your own use. From outside the EU you may bring up to 2 kg of powdered infant formula per person, unopened, branded and needing no refrigeration before opening, and a pack you are using is accepted. Bring enough for the first days and buy the rest in Sweden.
