On paper it’s a normal Friday. In practice the office is half empty, the school is closed and the agency you meant to call isn’t answering. Here’s why, which days it happens in 2027, and how to plan around it.
When you need this
Your trip includes the week of Ascension Day, in May or early June. You got an out-of-office reply on a Friday that isn’t a holiday. Or you’re in Sweden between Christmas and New Year and need something done.
It also matters if you plan to phone a Swedish agency or a company on a bridge day, are booking a hotel or train for a Swedish long weekend, or have just moved here and wonder whether you get the day off.
What a klämdag is
Klämdag (plural klämdagar, “squeezed day”) is a working day trapped between two days off, usually a public holiday on a Tuesday or Thursday and the weekend next to it. Isof, the government’s language and folklore institute, dates the word to 1964 and links it to Ascension Day: that holiday is always a Thursday, so many people take the Friday as leave, or work it in beforehand, and get a long weekend.
The trade unions Unionen and Vision define it the same way: a day, or several days, lying between holidays or other days off. Germans will recognize it as a Brückentag.
Is it a day off? What the law says
No. Sweden’s public holidays are set by Lag (1989:253) om allmänna helgdagar, a two-paragraph statute: every Sunday plus 13 named days, with the rule for when each falls. Klämdagar are not on the list, and the Act gives nobody time off on any day. Unionen puts it bluntly: under the law there is no right to be off on a klämdag.
So where does the day off come from?
| Source | How it works | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Local agreement | Union and employer can agree on klämdag leave locally (Vision) | Practice |
| Employer policy | Some employers close or give the day; others don’t | Practice |
| Annual leave | One leave day buys four days off — leave counts weekdays only (semesterlagen 3 a §) | Law |
| Working it in | Staff work extra hours beforehand (jobba in) to earn the day | Practice |
That last-but-one row is the engine. Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays never use up Swedish annual leave, so a Thursday holiday plus one leave day equals a four-day weekend.
This is the opposite of what German readers know: in Germany work rests by law on statutory holidays. Sweden’s holiday Act contains no such rule at all — see Swedish public holidays for what that means on the red days themselves.
Klämdagar in 2027
These dates are computed from the statute’s own rules. Easter Sunday 2027 is 28 March, so Ascension Day, the sixth Thursday after it, is 6 May.
| Date (2027) | Squeezed between | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Mon 4–Tue 5 Jan, Thu 7–Fri 8 Jan | New Year weekend, Epiphany (Wed 6 Jan), weekend | Two-day gaps; no single klämdag |
| Fri 7 May | Ascension Day (Thu 6 May) and the weekend | The classic klämdag |
| Mon 27–Thu 30 Dec | Christmas weekend (Fri 24–Sun 26) and New Year’s Eve (Fri 31) | Mellandagar, the “between days” |
2027 is a thin year. Easter never produces a klämdag, because Good Friday and Easter Monday already touch the weekend. Midsummer Eve is always a Friday. May Day falls on a Saturday and National Day on a Sunday, and Sweden has no substitute days. More on 6 June in Swedish National Day.
2028 has more: Friday 7 January (Epiphany on a Thursday), Friday 26 May (after Ascension Day), Monday 5 June (National Day on a Tuesday) and Wednesday 27–Friday 29 December.
Find them yourself: the Friday after Ascension Day is always one. Then look for 1 January, 6 January, 1 May, 6 June or 25–26 December on a Tuesday or Thursday.
What closes and what stays open
A klämdag is a weekday in law, so most of Sweden’s consumer side runs as normal. The change is in offices, schools and phone lines.
| Runs as normal | Often thinner or closed |
|---|---|
| Shops and supermarkets | Offices and decision-makers |
| Systembolaget (weekday hours) | Some agency contact centers |
| Public transport (a weekday) | Schools, in many municipalities |
| Normal weekday prices | Business meetings and replies |
Agencies. Each sets its own hours. On the klämdag of Friday 15 May 2026, Migrationsverket’s contact center was closed all day, while Transportstyrelsen stayed open on short hours, as little as 9–12 on its main lines. Agencies also trim hours on days before holidays: Migrationsverket ran 09:00–13:00 on 2 and 30 April 2026. Always check the avvikande öppettider (changed opening hours) page first.
Schools. Each municipality or school authority sets its own term dates, within a national frame of at least 178 school days and at least 12 lovdagar (pupil days off). Many put one on the klämdag. Uppsala and Gothenburg both gave pupils Friday 7 May 2027 off; Uppsala also gave 30 April. When schools close, parents take the day too. See Swedish school holidays for the longer breaks.
Shops. Systembolaget lists ordinary hours on 4 and 5 January 2027, either side of the Epiphany closure, and extended hours on 29–30 December 2026. See Systembolaget hours and opening hours in Sweden.
Travelling on a klämdag weekend
Swedes use these weekends to travel. Trafikverket described the 2026 Ascension weekend as a travel holiday, and with schools off, families fill trains, hotels and cabins.
Long weekends are also when big track works get done. In 2026 Trafikverket shut rail traffic south of Stockholm for 88 hours, from Wednesday 13 May at 22:00 to Sunday 17 May at 14:00. Replacement buses carried fewer passengers than the trains, and Trafikverket advised good margins.
- Book trains and rooms early for Ascension weekend — see the booking timeline for Sweden.
- Check Trafikverket for engineering works in the region you’ll travel through.
- Do business on Monday to Wednesday of Ascension week, not Thursday or Friday.
- Shop and sightsee normally on the klämdag itself.
Mistakes to avoid
- Thinking a klämdag is a holiday. It’s a normal weekday in law; shops and transport run.
- Thinking nothing changes because it’s a workday. Phone lines, offices and schools may close.
- Taking one employer’s practice as national. Klämdag leave is local agreement or policy.
- Expecting a Swedish colleague in the mellandagar. The days between Christmas and New Year are a common time for leave, and shops run sales instead. See Swedish Christmas traditions.
- Reading German Brückentag rules into Sweden. Swedish holiday law carries no rest rule at all.

FAQ
What is a klämdag in Sweden?
A klämdag is an ordinary working day squeezed between a public holiday and a weekend. The classic one is the Friday after Ascension Day, which always falls on a Thursday. Many Swedes take that Friday off to get a four-day weekend. The word has been recorded since 1964, according to Isof, the Swedish language and folklore institute.
Is a klämdag a public holiday?
No. Sweden’s public holidays are every Sunday plus 13 named days in Lag (1989:253), and no klämdag is on the list. Nobody has a legal right to the day off. Some employers give it through a local agreement or policy; otherwise people use annual leave. Shops, Systembolaget and public transport run as on a normal weekday.
What are the klämdagar in 2027?
Computed from the holiday Act, the main klämdag in 2027 is Friday 7 May, after Ascension Day on 6 May. Epiphany falls on a Wednesday, leaving two-day gaps on 4–5 and 7–8 January. Between Christmas and New Year, Monday 27 to Thursday 30 December are the mellandagar. National Day falls on a Sunday.
Are Swedish schools closed on klämdagar?
Often, but not by national rule. Each municipality or school authority sets its own term dates and must give at least 12 days off a year. Many place one on the klämdag: Uppsala and Gothenburg both gave pupils Friday 7 May 2027 off. Independent schools decide for themselves, so check the specific school’s calendar.
Are government offices open on a klämdag?
It varies by agency. Migrationsverket’s contact centre was closed on the klämdag of 15 May 2026, while Transportstyrelsen stayed open with short hours, from 9 to 12 on its main lines. There is no national rule. Check the agency’s page for changed opening hours before you call or visit.
Is it a good idea to travel in Sweden on a klämdag weekend?
It can be, with planning. Shops and transport run as on a normal weekday, but schools are often off and Swedes travel for the long weekend, so trains and accommodation fill up. In 2026, Trafikverket also shut rail lines south of Stockholm for 88 hours over Ascension weekend. Book early and check Trafikverket for disruptions.
