Swedish gyms are built around monthly memberships, but every big operator also sells a way in for a short stay. The trick is to go when the reception is staffed and to ask for the right product. Here’s how each one works and which house rules you’ll be expected to follow.
When you need this
You’re in Sweden for a few days or weeks and don’t want to lose your routine. Or you’re outside a gym at nine in the evening and the door only opens with an app. Maybe a sign-up form has just asked for a personnummer (Swedish personal identity number) you don’t have. Or you just want to know whether to pack indoor shoes and a padlock.
Your options at a glance
The line that matters is staffed reception vs. direct-debit membership. Short-stay products are sold and activated at a staffed desk. Monthly memberships paid by Swedish direct debit (autogiro) are built for residents.
| Route | Where | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Drop-in visit | SATS, at reception | Pay on the day; valid that day |
| Single ticket (engångsbiljett) | Friskis&Svettis associations | No association membership needed |
| Trial week (provträning) | Nordic Wellness, staffed reception | Valid ID; card or wristband bought with it |
| Seven-day trial | Fitness24Seven, online | The app; not renewed automatically |
| Gym entry or 10-card | Municipal swimming-hall gyms | Pay at reception; pool and sauna often included |
| Outdoor gym (utegym) | Parks, running tracks | Nothing; free |
Chain by chain: what a visitor can buy
SATS. Non-members can pay for a drop-in visit at the gym’s reception. It covers your own training in the gym plus group classes with free places, and it’s valid that day. If you join within 30 days, SATS refunds the drop-in fee when you send the receipt to customer service. SATS counts drop-in, trial and campaign memberships as memberships, so its general terms apply to them.
Friskis&Svettis. This is a member-owned non-profit, run as a separate association in each town. Normally you pay the local association’s yearly membership fee before you can buy a training card, but a single-visit ticket is the exception. Uppsala’s price list, for example, covers single visits to the gym, group training and spinning, and gives a reduced guest price to anyone with a valid card from another Friskis&Svettis association.
Watch the word dagkort. At Friskis&Svettis it’s a daytime card for training that starts before 15:00, not a day pass. Ask for an engångsbiljett instead.
Nordic Wellness. Its trial week can be used once per person per calendar year, at any club, and must be activated at a staffed reception with valid ID. You buy a membership card or wristband with it, and that also locks the lockers. Free trials are not offered in June, July and August, the months most visitors arrive, and a paid week or month replaces them. You can also pay for a single visit during staffed hours, or buy a 10-visit card that’s valid for six months at almost all clubs.
Fitness24Seven. This chain runs on its app. A seven-day trial is sold online and doesn’t renew automatically. You log in with email and password, then scan a code at the entrance and another on the way out. The minimum age for membership is 18.
Personnummer, BankID and ID
For the single visits and trials above, the operator pages we read ask for valid ID, not a personnummer or BankID. A passport works fine. The wall is the monthly membership: Nordic Wellness states that its direct-debit contract requires a Swedish personnummer, a Swedish bank account and a valid Swedish ID card.
SATS verifies every member’s identity in person with valid ID before a membership can be used, and normally takes a profile photo. So a SATS membership bought online isn’t usable until you’ve visited a staffed club. BankID needs a Swedish personnummer, so visitors can’t get it; our guide to BankID for tourists explains why.
A short stay is also a reason to avoid direct-debit contracts. Fitness24Seven’s rolling membership has two months’ notice, and 12-month binding periods are common, so payments can continue after you’ve flown home.
Unstaffed 24/7 gyms
Many gyms are open far longer than their reception. Unstaffed hours are for registered members only, who get in with an app code or a personal card or wristband.
- Do your first visit during staffed hours. Nordic Wellness hands new members their card at a staffed reception before they can use unstaffed times, and guest training at another club is staffed-hours only.
- Check how your card opens the door. At some Nordic Wellness clubs the entry PIN is the last four digits of your personnummer. Without one, ask staff how your card will work.
- Never let anyone in behind you, even another member. Fitness24Seven charges a penalty fee per person let in and bans the member for two months on a first offence, permanently on a repeat.
- Leave by closing time. Nordic Wellness bills members for a security call-out if they stay in an unstaffed club after closing.
- Expect cameras and checks. Fitness24Seven gyms are camera-monitored around the clock, and guards and staff check membership cards.
Gym etiquette: the house rules every gym shares
No law covers gym etiquette. Each operator writes its own house rules (trivselregler), but the rules at SATS, Fitness24Seven, Friskis&Svettis and municipal gyms match closely. They fit the wider Swedish etiquette of quiet consideration.
- Clean indoor shoes, always. Outdoor shoes and bare feet aren’t allowed on the gym floor; SATS allows bare feet only in group classes where it recommends them. Take your outdoor shoes off at the marked shoe line (skogräns), carry them to your locker and lock them in. In the slushy season, Friskis&Svettis Uppsala suggests a plastic bag for them. More on the custom in shoes off indoors in Sweden.
- Training clothes. Jeans and work clothes don’t count as training clothes at Fitness24Seven or Nordic Wellness, and Fitness24Seven bans shirtless training.
- Wipe what you use. Every machine and bench, every time, then put the weights back. Drop heavy weights only in marked areas.
- No filming other people without their consent, and no photos at all in changing rooms.
- No alcohol. SATS and Nordic Wellness ban it on the premises.
- Empty your locker before you leave. SATS opens and empties locked lockers at closing time, and Fitness24Seven may cut locks on lockers left locked for long periods.
Lockers vary. Many gyms lock them with your membership card, wristband or a code, but some changing rooms expect your own padlock, so carry one. Gyms don’t answer for stolen belongings, so leave valuables at the hotel.
Swimming-hall gyms, outdoor gyms and hotel gyms
Swimming-hall gyms. Many municipal pools have a gym in the same building and sell entry like a pool ticket. In Värnamo the gym ticket includes the swim and sauna, and reception lends you a wristband that also locks your locker. Changing rooms are single-sex with showers, and staff of either sex may work in them. If you go on to the pool, its shower rules apply; see swimming pool rules in Sweden, and for the heat afterwards, sauna etiquette. Note that the gym in a pool building may be private: at Lund’s Högevall it belongs to the chain Actic and needs its own membership or single ticket. Many receptions are cashless and take card or Swish only.
Outdoor gyms. Municipal utegym in parks and beside running tracks are free, open to everyone and can’t be booked. Training is at your own risk. Most are always open, but some are fenced with set hours and an age limit: Sundsvall’s admits ages 15 and up, or 13 with an adult, and is lit in the evening.
Hotel gyms. These run on the hotel’s own terms and are usually for guests only. Ask at the front desk about hours, key-card access and whether the hotel has an arrangement with a gym nearby.

FAQ
Can I buy a day pass at a Swedish gym?
Usually, yes, but not always under that name. SATS sells non-members a drop-in visit at reception, valid that day. Friskis&Svettis associations sell single-visit tickets that need no membership. Nordic Wellness offers a trial week or a paid single visit during staffed hours. Municipal swimming-hall gyms sell gym entry like a pool ticket. Go when the reception is staffed.
Do I need a Swedish personnummer or BankID to join a gym?
For a single visit or trial, the operators’ pages we read ask for valid ID, not a personnummer or BankID. Monthly memberships are different: Nordic Wellness requires a Swedish personnummer, Swedish bank account and Swedish ID card for direct debit. Since visitors cannot get BankID, stick to products paid at reception or by card.
Can tourists use 24/7 unstaffed gyms?
Only once registered. Unstaffed hours are for valid members, who enter with an app code or a personal card or wristband. Fitness24Seven sells a seven-day trial online and works through its app. Nordic Wellness hands out cards during staffed hours first. Never let anyone in behind you: tailgating brings fees and bans.
Do I need indoor shoes at a Swedish gym?
Yes. SATS, Fitness24Seven, Friskis&Svettis and municipal gyms all require clean indoor shoes and ban outdoor shoes on the gym floor. Bare feet are not allowed either, except in some group classes. Take your outdoor shoes off at the marked shoe line, carry them to your locker and lock them in. In winter, a plastic bag for wet shoes helps.
Do I need to bring a padlock to a Swedish gym?
It depends on the locker. Many gyms lock lockers with your membership card, wristband or a code, and municipal gyms may lend a wristband that does it. Some changing rooms expect your own padlock, so carrying one is the safe choice. Either way, empty the locker before you leave: SATS opens locked lockers at closing time.
What is the gym etiquette in Sweden?
It is written into every house rulebook: clean indoor shoes and training clothes, wipe each machine or bench after use, put weights back, and drop heavy weights only where marked. Phones go silent, alcohol is banned, and filming other people without consent is not allowed, nor is any photography in changing rooms.
Are outdoor gyms in Sweden free?
Yes. Municipal outdoor gyms (utegym) in parks and beside running tracks are free and open to everyone, and you cannot book them. Training is at your own risk. Most are open-air and always accessible, but some are fenced with set hours and an age limit: Sundsvall’s admits ages 15 and up, or 13 with an adult.
