Swedish dating customs are easy to learn and vary a lot from person to person. The laws around it don’t vary at all, and one of them, the Cohabitation Act, catches couples who simply move in together.
When you need this
You have matched with someone in Stockholm and wonder what to suggest. The bill arrives on a first date and nobody reaches for it. You have been seeing a Swede for a year and one of you is about to give up a flat. Or a match you have never met asks you for money. This page covers all four.
How dating usually starts
People meet through apps, friends, work, studies, sports clubs and nights out. Apps have the most users in the big cities and university towns; in smaller places, friends, clubs and local events matter more.
Many visitors read Swedish reserve as lack of interest. In practice, a calm, short reply is often just a calm, short reply. Long build-ups and grand gestures are less common than a direct suggestion of a time and place, which is normal and not seen as pushy.
None of this is uniform. Age, region, background and personality matter more than nationality, so read everything in this section as a tendency, not a rule. Here is how custom and law split:
| What you’ll meet | What it is | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Either person asks | Custom (practice) | Suggest a concrete day and place |
| Splitting the bill | Custom (practice) | Offer to split unless you invited |
| Fika or one drink as a first date | Custom (practice) | Keep it short and easy |
| Age of consent 15 | Criminal law | Never assume age |
| Consent based on voluntary participation | Criminal law | Silence or drunkenness is not a yes |
| Living together makes you sambo | Civil law | Talk about a samboavtal first |
Who asks and who pays
Either person may ask someone out. A message like “Want to grab a fika on Saturday at 2?” beats a long chat thread.
When the bill comes, each person paying their own share is the default. If someone invited you and says jag bjuder (“my treat”), they are paying; accept and offer to pay next time. Insisting hard on paying for the other person can feel old-fashioned. Older people and some communities still date more traditionally, so follow the person you are with. The equality norms behind this are explained in gender equality in everyday Sweden.
Friends often settle shares with Swish, which needs a Swedish bank account and BankID. As a visitor, pay your part by card — see Swish for visitors.
The fika date
A fika is coffee or tea with something sweet, and a fika in a café is one of the most common first dates in Sweden. It is short, cheap and easy to end or extend, which takes pressure off both sides. A walk or one drink after work are the other low-key options; the custom itself is explained in Swedish fika, and the afterwork in Swedish drinking culture.
Summer, with long evenings, outdoor bars and festivals, is the busiest dating season. In winter, dates move indoors to cafés and bars.
Age of consent and consent
The age of consent in Sweden is 15. Sex with a child under 15 is rape of a child, punishable by three to six years in prison. Three details matter:
- Negligence is enough. For offences tied to an age limit, a person is liable even without intent if they were careless about the other person’s age.
- Protection continues to 18 where the older person is a parent, foster parent or carer by an authority’s decision, or improperly exploits the young person’s reduced ability to protect themselves, for example through their authority.
- A narrow small-age-gap exception exists for some offences between young people of similar age and development, when it is obvious there was no abuse.
Consent is the other fixed rule. Since 1 July 2018, sex with a person who does not participate voluntarily is rape, with or without violence, and voluntariness has to be expressed “by words or action or in another way”. The full rules, and the ban on buying sex, are in gender equality in everyday Sweden.
Two more offences come up in dating. Harassing someone by words or actions in a way likely to violate their sexual integrity, or exposing yourself, is sexuellt ofredande: a fine or up to two years. Sharing a nude or sexual image of someone in a way likely to cause them serious harm is olaga integritetsintrång: a fine or up to two years, and six months to six years in gross cases.
Moving in: when you become sambo
This is the part most guides miss. Under the Cohabitation Act (sambolagen, 2003:376), two people who live together permanently as a couple with a shared household, neither married, are sambo. The sex of the partners does not matter, and there is nothing to register: the law simply applies.
What moving in changes: if you separate, either partner can ask for the joint home and household goods bought for shared use to be split equally, whoever paid. The request must come within one year of the separation; if nobody asks, each keeps what they own.
What is in and out of the division:
| Included (samboegendom) | Not included |
|---|---|
| A home bought or rented for living together, including a co-op flat or house | A home one partner owned before moving in (normally) |
| Furniture, appliances and household goods for the shared home | Bank savings, cars and summer houses |
| Gifts or inheritance marked as the recipient’s separate property | |
| Things used only by one partner |
The equal split is not absolute. If it would be unreasonable, especially after a short relationship, the partner giving up property may keep more. And a partner who needs a rented or co-op flat most can in some cases take it over, though without shared children only for exceptional reasons; that right cannot be signed away.
While you live together, neither of you may sell, rent out or mortgage the joint home, or sell joint household goods, without the other’s consent.
You can opt out. Partners, or people about to move in, can agree in writing that no division will take place or that certain property is excluded. This samboavtal must be signed by both; it does not need to be registered or witnessed.
Sambo is not marriage. Sambos do not inherit from each other unless they have written a will, and they owe each other no maintenance, even after a very long relationship. If a sambo dies, the survivor can request a division and always receive joint property worth up to two price base amounts (prisbasbelopp, set yearly), as far as the property suffices after debts. That is the floor, not an inheritance.

Romance scams and staying safe
Polisen has its own guidance on romance scams (romansbedrägeri). The classic pattern is a match you have never met who asks for money, often after a sudden accident or with a parcel of belongings you must pay to release.
- Never send money on request to someone you have not met.
- Do a reverse image search on a profile photo you doubt.
- If you have paid, contact your bank first to try to stop the transfer, then report it on 114 14 or at a police station. Save account numbers, IBANs and screenshots, and cut all contact, including people who offer to recover the money.
For real dates, meet in public first and tell a friend where you are going. Save 112 for emergencies, 114 14 for the police (+46 77 114 14 00 from a foreign mobile), and Kvinnofridslinjen on 116 016, free and open 24 hours, for support after violence or sexual violence. More on safety and help after an assault is in solo female travel in Sweden, and on other frauds in scams in Sweden.
Moving to Sweden for a partner
If you are not an EU citizen, you usually need a residence permit to live with a partner in Sweden and must normally apply from outside the country. Married, registered and cohabiting couples qualify, as do couples planning to marry or move in together. Both partners must be over 21, and the partner in Sweden must meet residence, maintenance and housing requirements.
New since 1 October 2026: Migrationsverket’s family-ties rules changed, with stricter requirements for the partner in Sweden and a higher maintenance amount. Older guides describe the previous rules; check Migrationsverket before you apply.
For work permits and first steps, see moving to Sweden for work.
Mistakes to avoid
- Treating moving in as legally nothing. In Sweden it can make you sambo. Talk about a samboavtal before one of you gives up a flat.
- Assuming sambo equals married. No inheritance, no maintenance. Write a will if you want your partner to inherit.
- Missing the one-year deadline after a separation. After that, each keeps what they own.
- Fighting over the bill. Offer to split, or say clearly that you are treating if you invited.
- Reading reserve as rejection. Suggest a concrete fika instead of waiting for a signal. If small talk and personal space puzzle you, read Swedish personal space.
- Sending money to an online match. Never, whatever the story.

FAQ
Who pays on a first date in Sweden?
Usually both of you. Splitting the bill is the default on Swedish dates, and offering to split never causes offence. If someone invited you and says jag bjuder (“my treat”), they are paying; accept and offer to pay next time. Insisting hard on paying for the other person can feel old-fashioned. Older people and some communities still keep more traditional habits.
What is a fika date?

What does sambo mean in Sweden?
Sambo means two people who live together permanently as a couple with a shared household, neither married. The Cohabitation Act then applies automatically, with no registration. If you separate, either partner can ask within a year for the joint home and household goods bought for shared use to be split equally, whoever paid. A written samboavtal can opt out.
Do sambos inherit from each other in Sweden?
No. Sambos do not inherit from each other unless they have written a will. A surviving sambo can request a division of the joint home and household goods and always receive up to two price base amounts from that property, if it suffices after debts. Sambos also owe each other no maintenance, even after a long relationship.
How do I spot a romance scam on a dating app?
Be wary of a match you have never met who asks for money, often after a sudden accident or with a parcel you must pay to release.
