Trollhättan’s famous falls are dry most of the year, and the daily summer releases older guides promise no longer happen. Here is when the water actually runs, what to see when it doesn’t, and what’s open right now.
When you need this
- You want to see Trollhättefallen with water and need to know when that actually happens
- You’re planning a day trip from Gothenburg and want the train time
- You want to visit the Saab Car Museum and need to know whether it’s open
- You’re traveling with children and want a rainy-day option
- You’re taking a boat up Göta älv and want to know how the locks work
Trollhättan at a glance
Trollhättan is an industrial town on Göta älv, the river that drains Lake Vänern to the sea at Gothenburg. The municipality had 59,265 inhabitants at the end of 2025. The town grew up around a 32-meter series of falls that once carried about 900 cubic meters of water a second.
Today almost all that water goes through two hydropower stations, Olidan and Hojum. The old riverbed is dry most of the time, and that single fact shapes any visit.
| Sight | What it is | For a visitor in 2026–27 |
|---|---|---|
| Trollhättefallen | Falls on Göta älv, normally dry | Water runs on schedule only during Fallens Dagar in July |
| Lock area (slussområdet) | Locks from 1800, 1844 and 1916 side by side | The 1916 locks still carry cargo ships and leisure boats |
| Olidehålan and Kungsgrottan | The gorge below the falls; a pothole signed by kings | Open ground by Oscarsbron |
| Saab Car Museum | The Saab car collection | Closed 1 October 2026 until January 2027 |
| Innovatum Science Center | Hands-on science center in the old Nohab works | Open Tuesday–Sunday |
When the falls run
The water releases, fallpåsläpp, are Vattenfall’s decision. In March 2024 the company announced that the year’s releases would happen only during Fallens Dagar, citing the strained energy situation in Europe and Sweden. The daily summer releases that guidebooks and booking sites still describe ended then.
For summer 2026 the destination organization, Visit Trollhättan Vänersborg, confirmed the same rule: no scheduled releases outside Fallens Dagar. Don’t let an older page talk you out of this.
The falls can still open outside the festival when Lake Vänern’s level needs regulating. Those openings are unpredictable and can’t be guaranteed in advance, so you can’t plan a trip around one. When the gates do open, about 300,000 liters of water a second come through, so keep out of the riverbed below the dam.
Fallens Dagar
Fallens Dagar, “Days of the Falls”, is the town’s July festival. In 2026 it ran Friday 17 to Sunday 19 July, with a market, a funfair and free concerts. The falls ran six times a day:
| Day (2026) | Release times |
|---|---|
| Friday 17 July | 12:00, 14:00, 16:00, 18:00, 20:00, 23:00 |
| Saturday 18 July | 12:00, 14:00, 16:00, 18:00, 20:00, 23:00 |
| Sunday 19 July | 12:00, 14:00, 16:00, 18:00, 20:00, 23:00 |
The festival closed with the traditional last release at 23:00 on Sunday. The program is marked “subject to change”, and the 2027 dates had not been announced when we checked.
Where to watch
Oscarsbron, the bridge over the falls, gives the best view of the falls and the river. For the highest view, climb Kopparklinten. Both are public ground, so watching costs nothing.
The locks and the canal
Ships have climbed past the falls since the first usable lock flight opened in 1800. A wider flight followed in 1844, after the Göta Canal opened. The present, much larger locks came into use in 1916, the same year Trollhättan became a town.
The 1800 and 1844 flights have long been out of use, but they still stand beside the working locks. That gives you three generations of canal engineering in one walk. The park around them, Gamle Dal, leads past the old locks down to the river, and the Canal Museum (Kanalmuseet) opens from the end of June to the end of August. The whole canal and lock area is a statligt byggnadsminne (state-listed building).
The Swedish Maritime Administration, Sjöfartsverket, runs the Trollhätte Canal. It is 82 km long with six locks — one at Lilla Edet, four at Trollhättan and one at Brinkebergskulle — and climbs 44 meters to Lake Vänern.
- Cargo ships use the canal around the clock, all year, and always have priority. About 10 pass the Trollhättan locks a day, plus some 4,000 leisure boats in the summer months.
- Leisure boats can pass the bridges and locks between Ströms sluss and Gropbron daily 09:00–19:00; call them on VHF channel 9.
- The lock fee is paid at Kanalcentralen in Trollhättan. A Göta Canal ticket does not cover it.
The locks are aging. Trafikverket considers today’s locks worn out by 2030, and new locks at Lilla Edet, Trollhättan and Vänersborg are due in service 2032–2034. A permit application for the Trollhättan lock has been filed.
Olidehålan, Kungsgrottan and the river valley
Olidehålan is the gorge where the falls once ended. Its lowest drop was called Helvetesfallet, “Hell’s Fall”. Olidan power station, built between 1906 and 1921, stands there now; Hojum started producing power in 1941. Olidan, with its intake canals, is a listed building.
Kungsgrottan, next to Oscarsbron, is an Ice Age jättegryta (pothole) used as a royal guestbook. King Adolf Fredrik signed first, in 1754, and later monarchs including Carl XVI Gustaf have added their names. It’s always open, with parking and a picnic area.
The valley sides along the falls form the Älvrummet naturreservat (nature reserve), about 61 hectares, managed by the municipality.
Saab Car Museum and Innovatum
The Saab Car Museum is closed. It shut on 1 October 2026 after its summer exhibition, The Box, ended, to dismantle the exhibition and move to permanent premises. It plans to reopen sometime in January 2027, but no date had been set when we checked.
The collection runs from the first prototype, Ursaaben, of 1946 to the last cars built before Saab’s 2011 bankruptcy. It has been housed in Nohab’s old locomotive works since 1987 and moved out because that building’s roof is being renovated. From 6 June to 30 September 2026 it showed 115 cars at Nova Arena, Nohabgatan 35. Check the museum’s website for the reopening date and address before you go.
Innovatum Science Center is open. It has about 4,200 m² of hands-on exhibitions on sustainability, life sciences and space, at Åkerssjövägen 16 in the old Nohab industrial district. Hours in autumn 2026:
| Day | Hours |
|---|---|
| Monday | Closed |
| Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday–Sunday | 11:00–16:00 |
| Thursday | 11:00–19:00 |
| Exceptions | Closed 4 and 12 November 2026 |

Getting there from Gothenburg
By train: the municipality puts the trip from Gothenburg at about 38 minutes. Trains and local buses meet at Resecentrum. Trollhättan is in Västtrafik zone C, so buy a ticket that covers three zones, or an SJ ticket.
Paying by tapping a bank card covers zone A only (Gothenburg, Mölndal, Partille and Öckerö) and isn’t valid on Västtåg trains at all. Our Gothenburg public transport guide explains the zones.
Track work: from 22:00 on 2 October to 22:00 on 4 October 2026, some Göteborg–Trollhättan departures are cancelled and replaced by an ersättningsbuss (replacement bus). Bicycles aren’t allowed on the replacement buses.
By car: Gothenburg to Trollhättan is about 75 km, roughly 65 minutes’ pure driving, by the E45 along Göta älv.
By boat: the guest harbor on Spikön has 45 berths with services.
Mistakes to avoid
- Trusting a listing of daily summer releases. They stopped in 2024. Check Visit Trollhättan Vänersborg’s falls page for the current year.
- Planning a Saab museum visit between October 2026 and January 2027. It’s closed, and the reopening date wasn’t set on 1 October 2026.
- Expecting the Saab museum at its 2026 summer address. The Box at Nova Arena closed on 30 September. Check the museum’s site.
- Tapping a bank card in Gothenburg and boarding the train. That ticket covers zone A only and isn’t valid on Västtåg trains.
- Thinking a Göta Canal ticket covers Trollhättan. The Trollhätte Canal is Sjöfartsverket’s; leisure boats pay its lock fee at Kanalcentralen.
- Watching from the station. Walk to Oscarsbron, or climb Kopparklinten.

FAQ
When is water released in Trollhättan Falls?
Only during Fallens Dagar in July. Vattenfall stopped the daily summer releases in 2024 and in summer 2026 again scheduled none outside the festival. In 2026 Fallens Dagar ran 17–19 July, with releases at 12:00, 14:00, 16:00, 18:00, 20:00 and 23:00 each day. The 2027 dates are announced by Visit Trollhättan Vänersborg.
Can I see the falls with water outside Fallens Dagar?
Only by chance. Vattenfall may open the dam gates when Lake Vänern’s level needs regulating, but these openings are unpredictable and not announced as tourist events. The rest of the time the water runs through the Olidan and Hojum power stations and the old riverbed is largely dry. Stay out of it: an opening sends about 300 cubic meters a second through.
Is the Saab Car Museum open?
Not right now. The museum closed on 1 October 2026 after its summer exhibition, The Box, ended, to dismantle the exhibition and move to permanent premises; its old building needs a new roof. It plans to reopen sometime in January 2027, but had not set a date or confirmed the address on 1 October 2026. Check the museum’s website before you travel.
How do I get to Trollhättan from Gothenburg?
By train from Gothenburg Central: the municipality puts the trip at about 38 minutes, arriving at Resecentrum, where local buses also stop. Trollhättan is in Västtrafik zone C, so buy a ticket that covers three zones or an SJ ticket; a ticket bought by tapping a bank card covers zone A only. By car it is about 75 km on the E45.
Can I watch ships going through the locks?
Yes. Cargo ships use the Trollhätte Canal around the clock all year and have priority, and leisure boats pass the locks daily between 09:00 and 19:00. At Trollhättan four working locks from 1916 sit beside the disused flights of 1800 and 1844, so you see three generations of canal engineering in one walk.
What is Olidehålan?
It is the gorge below Trollhättefallen where the falls once ended; the lowest drop was called Helvetesfallet, Hell’s Fall. Olidan power station, built between 1906 and 1921, stands there and takes most of the river’s water. The gorge lies in the Älvrummet nature reserve, about 61 hectares of steep valley sides managed by Trollhättan municipality.
Where is the best place to watch the falls?
Oscarsbron, the bridge over the falls, gives the best view of the falls and the river, according to the destination organization. For the highest view, climb Kopparklinten. Next to Oscarsbron is Kungsgrottan, an Ice Age pothole where Swedish monarchs have signed their names since King Adolf Fredrik in 1754. Both are public ground, so watching costs nothing.
